We have a new publication!

Hi everyone! We are proud to announce that we have just published a new peer-reviewed publication in the scientific journal, Frontiers in Marine Science, titled “Connectivity between white shark populations off Central California, USA and Guadalupe Island, Mexico”. This paper highlights the movement rates of sub-adult and adult white sharks across international boundaries. Using acoustic telemetry and receivers placed strategically at these two main aggregation sites, we learned that 1) while movement probability is low, about 9% of the animals we acoustically tagged moved to the other site (i.e. from California to Guadalupe Island and vice versa) 2) Sub-adult sharks were more likely to move than adult sharks 3) Sharks were more likely to move from Guadalupe Island to California and 4) Sharks from all size classes moved from one site to the other, making it the first time we have detected adult white sharks using the other site with implications for further understanding the genetic structure of this northeastern Pacific population of white sharks.

Additionally, we highlight the need for collaborative management considerations due to the nature of a protected species moving across international boundaries, potentially being disproportionately exposed to fishing mortality. We hope that we can find a common ground and resources to protect this vulnerable top predator.

Thank you all for your support!

Paul and Scot
